“One Future Illinois,” to Offer a Common-Sense Voice on Civic and Political Issues

Chicago business and civic leaders plan a more active role in local and state politics with the creation of a non-profit (501c4) and an affiliated political action committee. Called One Future Illinois (OFI), the new c4 will be initially engaged around public safety, education, city and state finances, transportation, and jobs. The PAC will be active in local and state elections.

Michael Ruemmler, a government relations professional who served in the administrations of President Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, will be the President of the 501c4 and the PAC. He said, “With each election cycle, our politics are more polarized, and our governments are less effective. One Future Illinois will cut across party lines to solve problems and improve the quality of life for all who live here.”

The OFI boards are still forming but they include former investment banker Steve Koch, who served as Deputy Mayor in the Emanuel administration; Founder and CEO of Topography, Liam Krehbiel; former President of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois, Carol Portman; The Vistria Group General Counsel Jesse Ruiz, who serves only on the non-profit (501c4) board; and Derek Douglas, President of the Civic Committee and the Commercial Club of Chicago.

Douglas said that OFI is both non-partisan and non-ideological, open to ideas from across the political spectrum, and willing to work with elected leaders in both parties and other civic stakeholders to get things done.  He also acknowledged that OFI will be aligned with the business community’s policy agenda.  He said, “Our goal is for a strong, vibrant city and state that provides opportunities for all who live here to thrive and becomes a priority destination for others across the world.”

Frederick H. Waddell, Retired Chairman and CEO of Northern Trust, said that he is hopeful that One Future Illinois spurs more debate and engagement around economic and quality of life issues for the region.

“It’s important for the business and civic community to have a voice in local and state politics in order to advance our long-term, systemic civic priorities,” Waddell said, adding, “Stronger engagement now is necessary to shape a better future for tomorrow.”
